Cork, its sustainable credentials and Galula Studio
Cork is made from the bark of the cork oak (Quercus suber) and is entirely natural. It widely regarded as being one of the world’s most sustainable materials.
It is harvested by simply removing the bark from the tree. Each time the tree is harvested it regenerates itself and can be re-harvested again 9 years later.
Cork is biodegradable, it absorbs large amounts of CO2 while it grows, it can be recycled and repurposed and it also benefits from being hydroponic which means it is impermeable, buoyant, and elastic. Ultimately this means there are many potential uses and benefits beyond that of being used as a wine stopper!
Galula Studio, based in Portugal where 46% of the worlds cork is produced, design and manufacture stunning homeware and furniture made from cork. They are testament to the many benefits of cork.
